Gonzaga University is a private Catholic university located in Spokane, which is a city located in Northwestern Unites States, in the US State of Washington. It is the largest city and the county seat of Spokane County, as well as the metropolitan center of the Inland Northwest region. The name of Spokane, which was officially incorporated as a city in 1881, in Salish, means `Children of the Sun`, name which was drawn from the Native American tribe called Spokane.
Gonzaga University was founded in 1887, by Father Joseph Cataldo, SJ, who was an Italian-born priest, and missionary, who had a desire to create a Catholic school for Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest. Since then, the university grew, but kept its Catholic, Jesuit and humanistic tradition, offering today its students, through 5 undergraduate schools, BBA, BA, BE, Bed, BGS, BSCE, BS, BSCpE, BSCS, BSEE, BSGE, BSME and BSN degrees.
The athletic teams from Gonzaga are known as Gonzaga Bulldogs, who participate in the NCAA’s Division I West Coast Conference, in various sports, being best known for their achievements in men’s basketball. The Bulldogs did not make their appearance in the NCAA tournament until 1995, becoming nationally recognized since they made the regional finals in the ’99 NCAA tournament, re-appearing in the tournament, every year, since then.
The list of notable Gonzaga alumni contains names such as singer Bing Crosby, Tom Foley - former Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, noted writer Sherman Alexie, Christine Gregoire - current Washington governor and the state’s first female state attorney general, stand-up comic, Dan Cummins, Ben Ysursa – Idaho, Secretary of State, Republican, as well as several other people who have made themselves notable in various fields, after graduation.
